A Roundup of the Kreaverse
|
August arrived, softly, gently and firmly. And brought with it, the chasing grey clouds, and the tug of rains. The warm balmy days transformed by the pitter patter at daybreak, the slow shift to lush green and the heavy earthy scent - a time of relief, and renewal. Students, old and new, have settled in, and campus life is in full swing. There is chatter, there are ideas and discourse, an exuberant rollercoaster of sentiments. This edition, like all others, is an ode to this very rollercoaster, the energy that keeps it all alive. We also raise a toast to our weekly dispatch, 175 editions down since its inception, and many more to go. We thank everyone in the Krea community for taking this journey alongside us every Friday evening.
This August, as raindrops come in, slow and steady, feeding into the earth, into our sentiments, into our daily ways, we continue doing what we do best - learn, teach, enquire, build. There are lessons being learnt in the classrooms, and some, under the open skies.

The Handbook of Diasporic Indian Writing in English is an essential reference to Indian literature. Dr Chirag Dhara, Associate Professor, Environmental Studies, SIAS, was a co-panelist, with Dr Aditi Deshpande, Pune University at an event organised by the 'National Alliance for Climate and Ecological Justice’ on 31 July 2026. The topic was ‘Super El Niño and Climate change: Is Global Heating making El Niños stronger and more impactful?’ in which they spoke about the mechanisms linking the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Monsoon, and the implications for India of the developing ’Super El Niño’.

Professor Guha Dharmarajan, Professor, Biological Sciences, SIAS was a part of the Lectures On The Rocks Series, delivering the fifteenth lecture - Crossing the line: Human diseases of animal origin; an informative and deep discussion of biology, veterinary studies, and disease ecology on 25 July 2026 at Chennai. How do pathogens travel from the animals they inhabit, to the humans near these animals - what does it mean for us as a civilisation, how does this happen often enough, and end up changing history - these were some of the questions answered. A book review by Dr Preeti Sampat, Associate Professor, Sociology & Social Anthropology, SIAS, of Properties of Rent: Community, Capital and Politics in Globalizing Delhi by Sushmita Pati was published in South Asia Multidisciplinary Academic Journal (SAMAJ).
Dr Sampat also delivered a lecture titled 'Land-Rent-Urbanization' for the inaugural Summer School programme of the Institute for Research on Andhra Pradesh (IRAP), held from 31 July to 2 August 2026.

On 5 August 2026, the Sociology and Social Anthropology discipline hosted the third edition of Sociology on the Rocks, themed Beyond the Protest/Beyond the Cockroach. Bringing together students, faculty and staff, the session explored rage as a tool of mobilisation through a social anthropological lens. Participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions on the nature of anger, what drives collective action, and the role of Gen Z in protests and social movements.

The Student Council of SIAS hosted the first Townhall of the trimester on 31 July 2026, bringing together ministry wise updates and a reiteration of guidelines for freshers. The session addressed complaints and questions raised by students, with issues discussed in detail and solutions offered on the spot.

The SIAS and BBA Batch of 2026 kicked off their college journey with a high energy Freshers' Night on 1 August 2026, at the Student Activity Centre. The evening was packed with pulsing music from an amazing DJ, vibrant lights, and non stop dancing that had everyone on their feet.

A Gratitude dinner was held as a way for the Office of Student Life (OSL) to say thank you to everyone who made orientation what it was.
