Krea Data Science Talk: Data as an Enabler of Innovation: From Cybersecurity to Deepfake Detection

ABOUT THE TALK

For more than 15 years, Lakshmanan Nataraj’s work across cybersecurity, deepfake detection, and academic research has demonstrated a powerful idea: data is not just a resource - it is the origin of innovation itself. His seminal contributions, including the malware-as-images technique with almost 2,000 citations, transformed raw binary code into visual intelligence and reshaped how the world detects threats at scale. Large-scale operational systems such as SARVAM, which have processed millions of malware samples over more than a decade, further illustrate the importance of well-designed data pipelines in driving long-term innovation and reliability. His deepfake and GAN-generated image detection research - widely cited and built on subtle co-occurrence patterns showed that even the smallest disturbances in data can reveal profound truths. Through the DARPA MediFor program, he helped build metadata-driven satellite image authentication systems that safeguard the integrity of visual content in an era of synthetic media.

Across projects funded by DARPA, ONR, and NGA, his message remains consistent: breakthroughs do not emerge from models alone, but from the right data, the right representations, and the courage to see information differently. From securing digital ecosystems to establishing trust in the age of generative AI, this journey illustrates that when data is treated as a strategic, intentionally crafted asset, we unlock innovations that transform industries, strengthen security, and inspire the next frontier of AI.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Lakshmanan Nataraj is a researcher and innovator with 15+ years of experience in signal processing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. He is best known for his malware visualization work, a foundational technique cited 1,900+ times, and for his contributions to deepfake/GAN detection, metadata forensics, and satellite image authentication, collectively resulting in 25+ papers, 8 US Patents, and 4,900+ citations.

Lakshmanan has served as PI/Co-PI on major U.S. government research programs, including projects funded by DARPA, ONR, and NGA, and played a key role in the DARPA MediFor initiative on media integrity for which he was recognized as a Dagstuhl Scholar in 2022. Earlier in his career, he completed research internships at Walt Disney Animation Studios and SRI International, gaining multidisciplinary experience in imaging, vision, and applied machine learning. He has held senior technical roles at Mayachitra (USA) and Trimble. He has been part of the Organizing Committee for ICVGIP 2024, the ANRF + IIT Mandi National Webinar Competition 2026, and the ANRF AI for Science National Hackathons - AISEHack 2026. Today, he is an Independent AI Researcher and Consultant advising government, startups, nonprofits, and other organisations, including the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), IFMR Institute on AI Adoption, AI for Science, and AI Safety. At ANRF, he has been an integral part of Saral AI Democratising Research Initiative and the MAHA AI for Science and Engineering program, and has been helping professors and researchers create impactful outreach content using science communication concepts and AI tools.
