A Round-up of the Kreaverse
Summer heralds not just a season of leisure, but also a time ripe with possibilities in the realm of academia. The season beckons researchers, students, and educators alike to delve into new realms of knowledge, to forge connections, and to cultivate innovation.
With empty classrooms and a silent campus, the academic world transforms into a landscape of exploration and discovery. Faculty members embark on journeys of intellectual pursuit, unbound by the constraints of routine.
Meanwhile, our students are capitalising on the myriad opportunities presented by internships. While those who have secured placements are earnestly honing their skills for the corporate world.
But most important of all, with the highly anticipated Convocation 2024 celebration on the horizon, we are pulling out all the stops to ensure its resounding success.
Each day brings new prospects for growth because learning never stops here. This week has been no exception, with a handful of noteworthy developments unfolding in the Kreaverse.

Dr Rama Devi, Visiting Assistant Professor, SIAS, Krea University virtually presented a paper titled Politics in time precarity: Aspirations, Anxieties and Dalit youths in Delhi at the South Asia Forum Conference organised by the University of Melbourne.
Abstract: Recently, voluminous scholarship on Indian youths has drawn attention towards their inclination in communal politics that seeks cultural homogenisation and exorcising of the ‘other’, crucially of Muslims. Increasing formalisation and casualisation in the labour-market intensified by the restructuring of the economy, are depicted as important reasons for the youths drifting into communal politics. Wider economic transformations and the drastic alteration in the occupational structure hinder the integration of youths into formal, stable, and secure employment. Disillusioned with the contemporary labour market, communal politics alternately offers a cultural purpose and identity to the youth, mainly to young men. It allows them to renegotiate and recuperate their fractured masculinities. Focusing on the political aspirations of youths in a Dalit-dominant neighbourhood in Delhi, the paper argues that politics also acts as a means for the precariat youths to gain social status and economic mobility, which is denied in the job market.

Shweta Rani, Faculty Teaching Associate, Krea - CWP (Centre for Writing and Pedagogy) has contributed an essay titled Living with Mosquitoes: Exploring the Dengue Outbreak in Delhi to the edited volume Event and Everyday: Empiricisms and Epistemologies. This volume, edited by Proffesor Yasmeen Arif, has been published by Orient BlackSwan.
Abstract: In 2015, Delhi witnessed what can now be called the last dengue outbreak in the city. In this article, Shweta Rani draws upon her fieldwork conducted during and since the outbreak to comment on the rubric of Event-Everyday. It investigates how people – city dwellers, medical practitioners, officials, municipal workers, dengue patients, and their caretakers – deal with the persisting presence of mosquitoes in their everyday lives. While state health strategies seek absolute human-mosquito isolation, field narratives portray a more complex picture. For instance, municipal workers assigned the task of ‘killing’ mosquitoes encounter the resilience of an insect as a lifeform. Moreover, people, even while dealing with the dengue outbreak, don’t necessarily perceive its vector as their deadly foe. Shweta Rani argues that these modalities of living with a supposedly undesirable non-human other are too intricate to be captured by the episodic imagination of an event, as the latter is understood in the common parlance. Instead, paying heed to the intertwining of ‘event’ with its apparent antonym, the ‘everyday’, is essential. Establishing everyday’s dynamism and its susceptibility to innovation is analogous to challenging the temporal fixity of an event. Hence, the burden of this work is to demonstrate the potential of everyday to enrich our understanding of an event. The essay ends with potential questions this scholarship might enable us to ask.

Dr Suprio Bhar, IIT Kanpur, will be delivering a talk titled Brownian Motion and Stochastic Differential Equations, as part of Krea Mathematics Talk, on 6 June, 2024 from 10:30 am to 12:30 am IST at 3 D classroom, Krea University Campus.
About the talk: Brownian motion is a well-known stochastic process connected to Mathematical Physics, Statistical Mechanics, Partial Differential Equations and Mathematical Finance.
In this talk, we motivate the definition of a Brownian motion as an equation of motion of a particle in a homogeneous medium, and then extend the definition towards a more general equation of motion, the Stochastic Differential Equations. After a brief overview of existence and uniqueness results, we shall discuss certain dependence of the solution with respect to the initial condition. The last part of the talk shall be based on a joint work with Arvind Kumar Nath.
