Climate change is an increasing issue in the twenty-first century, threatening people’s lives and livelihoods worldwide. It has a significant impact on agriculture. As countries in the region begin to respond to climate-related risks in agriculture, such as through national action plans or policies, there currently needs to be more focus on local-level dynamics in agricultural systems.

Dr Vivek Radhakrishnan, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, SIAS was invited to participate in a symposium on Why Read Kant Now? organised by the Goethe-Institut Mumbai and the German Department of Mumbai University on 29 and 30 November 2024. He delivered a talk titled ‘How 'Humean' was Kant?’ at the symposium. He also moderated the inaugural keynote by Professor Rajendra Dengle, Retired Professor of German, JNU and the special lecture by Professor Heiner Klemme, Professor of Philosophy, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle.

Dr Venkata Srinu Bhadram, Assistant Professor of Physics, SIAS was invited to give a talk at the International Conference on Advanced Ceramics for Sustainability (Cera4S-2024), held at IIT Madras from 28 – 30 November 2024. In his talk titled, ‘Extreme Pressure as a Route to Discover New Metastable Materials’, he discussed the pivotal role of high-pressure techniques in discovering new metastable phases of ceramic materials, such as transition metal nitrides, oxides and high-entropy complex oxides. He highlighted how combining high-pressure experimental methods with machine learning approaches has the potential to drive transformative advancements, offering sustainable solutions for materials-based technologies.

Dr R S Sathya Saminadan, Associate Professor of Practice, IFMR GSB presented his paper, Marketing to Aliens, at the NGSC – 2024 Conference at IIM Jammu on 22 and 23 November 2024. The paper explores strategies for effective intergalactic marketing, combining creativity with established principles of marketing. It underscores the importance of adaptability and ethical considerations in marketing to diverse and unfamiliar segments, a concept that resonates with contemporary challenges in business strategy.

Ananya Manikandan, a second-year MBA student at IFMR GSB, secured second place in Financius '24, a national-level article writing competition organised by X-Fin, the Finance Association of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB). The competition focused on ‘Financial Restructuring in Volatile Markets: M&A and Strategic Solutions.’ Ananya’s achievement comes with a cash prize of ₹3,000, and her article will be featured in Finshastra, XIMB's annual business magazine.

The Sociology and Social Anthropology discipline at Krea hosted a film screening of Gaman on 4 December 2024 at 2A. The 1978 Hindi feature film, starring Farooq Sheikh, Smita Patil and introducing Nana Patekar in a supporting role, marks the directorial debut of Muzaffar Ali (who subsequently directed Umrao Jaan in 1981). The film deals with the themes of rural to urban migration. The film was introduced by Dr Sayandeb Chowdhury, Senior Assistant Professor of Literature, SIAS.

The Krea Psychology discipline organised a talk titled 'Disaster Response and Humanitarianism with a Focus on Vulnerable Populations: Experiences from Odisha' on 5 December 2024 by Sannyashai Kumar Behera, Deputy Secretary, Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Odisha. It explored the critical intersections of disaster response, humanitarianism and the protection of vulnerable populations, drawing on the lived experiences and insights from Odisha’s response to the catastrophic Super Cyclone of 1999. Through the experience of the speaker's journey — from his early days as a volunteer to his later role within the Odisha State Administration — the presentation examined the challenges and successes in providing aid to those most affected by the disaster.

The Analytics Committee of IFMR GSB recently hosted Datawiz 1.0, a two-day event focused on enhancing analytical skills. It began on 28 November 2024 with a 3-hour Python workshop by Dr Debashish Mishra, Assistant Professor, Data Science & Information Systems, IFMR GSB. The workshop was conducted online and offline to ensure better accessibility for all students. Participants gained hands-on experience with Python tools and received certificates for their participation.

The first round, Decode the Frame, was an engaging image-based quiz where students deciphered visual clues related to statistics, analytics and finance. The second round featured a case study competition, where participants analysed a business problem and submitted their solutions through presentations.

|
A creative marketing extravaganza
|
|
|
|
Markaholic, the Marketing Committee of IFMR GSB, held a two-day competition called Markastrat'24 on 2 and 3 December 2024. Round 1 was a high-energy marketing quiz hosted on Mentimeter. It featured 13 tagline questions, 13 logo identification challenges and 4 general marketing questions, each with a strict 20-second timer. This round tested participants’ quick thinking and marketing knowledge.

Round 1 brought together 20 teams, who had qualified in the previous round, for a dynamic meme war. Split into 10 batches of two, each team was assigned a brand to showcase through picture and video memes creatively. Teams competed head-to-head, entertaining both the audience and the judge, Dr Debankur Saha, Assistant Professor of Marketing, IFMR GSB. Anushka Goley and Y Ashi Ojha won the first prize of ₹2,000, Jayesh Sharma and Harsh Verma won the second prize of ₹1,500 and Urbi Budhadev and Sayan Das won the third prize of ₹1,000.

The Jazz Explorer Trio's recent performance presented by SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth) at Krea University (2nd in a series of collaborations) on 2 December 2024, perfectly captured the spirit of global cultural exchange. Composed of Danish artists Lars Møller (saxophone), Thor Madsen (guitar), and Jonas Johansen (drums), the group melds jazz traditions with a global outlook. Their setlist included tracks such as Blues In Five, A Woman’s Purse, Moose and Know that showcased both their musical brilliance and their knack for weaving cheerful, conversational rhythms into the fabric of their music, creating an experience that was moving. They also announced and played a few songs from their upcoming album, inspired by Miles Davis’s iconic album, Kind of Blue.

The Samarthan Committee at IFMR GSB is organising a fundraising on 6 December 2024 on campus. The event will feature stalls and all proceeds from this event will be used to support an old age home. 6.00 pm onwards at the basketball court.

The Feast, produced by Krea University and directed by Rishi Chandna, is a compelling short film that delves into the pressing issues of climate change and the intricate relationship between humans and water. Set in Pulicat, a coastal region straddling Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the film explores the critical themes of depleting water resources and environmental challenges.

It will feature a discussion between Ruchir Joshi, Visiting Faculty, Literature & the Arts, SIAS and Professor Mukund Padmanabhan, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, SIAS on 11 December 2024, 2.30 - 4.20 pm at 2H. In anticipation of Ruchir Joshi's forthcoming novel Great Eastern Hotel, he and Mukund Padmanabhan will talk about the process of writing fiction and non-fiction books about the same period. On 14 December 2024, Professor Aparna Vaidik, Professor of History, Ashoka University will be at the Roja Muthiah Research Library (RMRL), Chennai to conduct a history-writing workshop as part of a collaborative event between Krea-CWP and the RMRL. In this workshop, Professor Vaidik will discuss how historians draw upon evidence to construct narratives of the past.
