The Krea University community is invited to the inauguration of the new academic building at 11.30 am on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.
This state-of-the-art facility, made possible through the generous support of our Chancellor, Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, marks a significant milestone for Krea. The new space is designed to inspire and empower students and faculty alike, fostering growth and innovation. This event offers a chance for the community to come together, celebrate this important occasion and express gratitude to the Chancellor for his incredible generosity.

Krea Summer School (KSS) 2025 is a week-long immersive residential programme that introduces students to a wide variety of established and emerging fields of inquiry not covered in school curricula. The programme will be hosted at our lush green and state-of-the-art campus and will include an interesting mix of academics and experiential workshops.

New Associate Dean (Academics)

Dr Bharath Sundaram, Sundram Fasteners Associate Professor of Environmental Studies, School of Interwoven Arts and Sciences (SIAS), will take over as Associate Dean (Academics) of SIAS with effect from 1 January 2025. He will succeed Dr Panchali Ray, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Gender Studies, SIAS, to whom we are grateful for her contributions over the past two years.

How is digital access shaping women-led businesses in rural India? The Times of India featured a recent report by LEAD at Krea University in collaboration with the Nasscom Foundation. The study examines the opportunities and challenges of a digital-first world, offering valuable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders. Based on a survey of 792 women, it reveals that social commerce has become a key driver of business growth, with 71% of entrepreneurs attributing their success to social media. However, only 17.6% use digital tools for customer and order management, signaling significant untapped potential. Read the report here

Sparsh Makharia, pursuing a double major in Data Science and Computer Science at SIAS, has been selected as a LINC (Centre for Large-scale Imaging of Neural Circuits) Fellow for 2024-25. LINC is a multi-institutional consortium funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Brain Initiative CONNECTS program to collect and analyse imaging data that will allow us to probe connections in the human and non-human primate brain at unprecedented resolutions. As part of this training program, Sparsh will participate in weekly meetings and undertake project work in data and machine learning under the supervision of professors from renowned institutions such as Harvard, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), MIT, UCL, etc. Additionally, Sparsh will gain access to advanced computing resources to support their research.

Organised by the SIAS Sports Club, 16 members of the SIAS Football Club showcased their skills at a football tournament in Puzhal on 16 November 2024, securing an impressive 4th place.
Organised by the SIAS Sports Club, 20 students from the SIAS Volleyball Club participated in a practice match against the junior team from RSN Boys on 20 November 2024. The 5-set match was aimed at helping them gain valuable experience.

Over the past weekend, Rangasthala, the Theatre Club of SIAS, performed Krea’s first Tamil play – Arthur Miller’s Death Of A Salesman, completely translated and adapted by students. While the original play was set in 1940s America and was about the American Dream, Rangasthala's adaptation was set in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, and focused on Vicky Loganathan, a saree seller, his family and the final twenty-four hours of his life. The play explored themes of strained family relations, mental health and ambition. This adaptation was directed by SIAS students Aditya Chauhan and Subbu Karuppayee Bhavani and produced by Navya Khanna and Pranvi Khare. The show days were 15 and 16 November at SH3. Read more

The third edition of Wellbeing Week, organised by Inclusive Learning Support (ILS) and Peer Support Volunteers, has been offering an exciting line-up of events designed to nurture the mind, body and community.
The week-long celebration began on 17 November 2024 and throughout the week, participants have been engaging in a variety of expert-led workshops, including sessions on executive functioning, dance-movement therapy, hands-on self-care practices and energising Zumba classes. Read the highlights here

The Major Minor Mela, held on 16 and 17 November 2024 on campus, was a great success. Hosted by the Ministry of Learning, in collaboration with some of the academic clubs and societies under SIAS, the event aimed to give first-year students a comprehensive and interactive introduction to the diverse academic disciplines available at SIAS.

The SIAS Finance Club, in collaboration with Arth Nirmiti (Sunil Patodia Welfare Foundation), hosted an insightful workshop featuring Akshat Garg, AVP at Choice Wealth Private Limited on 16 November 2024 on campus.
In his engaging session, Garg highlighted the immense potential of sectors such as: Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI), Healthcare, Consumption, Information Technology (IT) and Manufacturing.
He skillfully linked these sectors to key macroeconomic indicators, providing a clear understanding of the forces driving their growth. Attendees gained actionable insights into investment opportunities and learned about strategic frameworks to navigate these promising areas effectively.

An Exhibition for a Cause

|
The #MeToo movement exhibition held on 15 and 16 November 2024 on campus was a vital platform for sparking honest conversations about sexual harassment and assault. The exhibition emphasised that by amplifying survivors' stories and experiences, we can create a culture of transparency, accountability and consent. It played a crucial role in normalising the conversation, breaking down stigmas and encouraging others to share their stories. It was overall a powerful tool for driving positive change and fostering a future where respect and empathy prevail. It was hosted by the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Advocacy (POSH) Group, in collaboration with Syahi - the Literary Arts Club of SIAS and the Pride Forum, dedicated to raising awareness of the #MeToo movement.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised the 14th edition of National Higher Education Summit with the theme Preparing a Future Workforce for India@100, on 18 November 2024, in New Delhi. Dr Prithvi Datta Chandra Shobhi, Dean, SIAS and Associate Professor of History, SIAS was a keynote speaker at the event. The summit engaged various stakeholders involved in Higher Education both from the public and private sector besides Government, to deliberate on these critical issues to contribute towards building the future workforce for 2047 and beyond.

Informal Pedagogy Session

|
The latest informal pedagogy discussion by the Centre for Writing and Pedagogy, Krea University (Krea-CWP) was held on 20 November 2024 at the faculty lounge. The discussion was led by Dr Srikrishnan Divakaran, Associate Professor of Computer Science, SIAS. He shared his experiences from the classroom in the form of some elementary exercises that have helped level the playing field in terms of student backgrounds and have helped students learn to learn by themselves.

The Outreach team and Krea-CWP is organising a 90-minute virtual workshop called ‘Storytelling in Persuasive Writing’ for students of grades 9 – 12 on 23 November 2024. The speaker Sayantan Datta is an Assistant Professor of Practice, Krea-CWP. Their session will help participants attentively read examples of well-written persuasive essays to identify elements of storytelling and their deft use in communicating ideas. The students will practice implementing some of these storytelling techniques in their writing through guided exercises.
Datta will also be at the Anna Centenary Library (5th floor), Chennai speaking on the topic ‘No Brainer: Intelligent Behavior in Brainless Organisms’, on 23 November 2024 at 11.00 am.
